Caker Crushes: Paris Mitchell
Caker Crushes is a series of creative beauties, captured in their own settings, baking, icing and decorating The Caker mixes in a matter of minutes. These time-poor, sweet-toothed friends of mine love cake, but don't always have the time to make one from scratch.
First up is the ethereal Paris Mitchell. I remember when I first met Paris and being instantly taken aback by not only her dark hair blue eyed beauty, but her warmth and energy, which is contagious. She always makes me giggle. Paris has made a serious name for herself in the fashion industry, but remains modest. She's my dream girl.
I caught up with Paris in her mum's Grey Lynn kitchen, as she baked a cake from our Chocolate Hazelnut Cake Mix. While she licked chocolate from everything she could, we chatted about what has been keeping her busy.
Hi Paris! Can you tell everyone a little bit about yourself and what you do?
I'm the Co-founder and Creative Director of fashion brand, Paris Georgia basics and online store, The Mercantile. Our store is a curation of local and international brands we love, as well as hand-picked vintage from around the world.
We are lucky to have had Paris Georgia basics picked up after our first season by a New York showroom, Maryam Nassir Zadeh. We design for the discerning and confident woman, who has a conscience when it comes to her wardrobe. She's unbothered by fashion credentials, she would rather focus on fabric and form.
So you started The Mercantile, and now you're killing it with Paris Georgia Basics, which to me has some similarities to my own journey, starting with The Caker and then branching out into my line of baking mixes. Tell me about your journey and how you're coping with everything that is going on!
Indeed a similar situation! It's funny, you never know what's around the corner when you start your own business. It just grows organically and the direction can chop and change, and I love change! Paris Georgia basics was originally created to fill the gap in The Mercantile Store. We wanted to compliment our one off vintage pieces with more refined garments. We have just kept growing from there, we've had incredible press and have found our strongest market in Australia and the U.S. It's a thrill seeing women I admire wearing our clothes.
You work so closely with Georgia, just like I do every day with my sister Anouk. How do you find working with your close friend? Tell me about the best parts.
It is the best part of the business. We compliment each other so well. You share the hard times and have your best friend there to celebrate the success with.
And the dress you're wearing now is one of your designs?
Yes! The dress I'm wearing Paris Georgia SS17, it has just been released on parisgeorgiabasics.com - I have been longing to wear it, waiting for the collection we designed months ago to be made is torture! Nevertheless, having our own brand is an incredible adventure.
What do you plan to do with this chocolate hazelnut cake once it's baked?
I love this flavour. I'm having some friends over for dinner tonight so it's the perfect dessert. I'll probably eat the most, and regret it after!
